テーマ・副題

While continuing to advance students’ general English skills, AES also incorporates a focus on the development of formal academic skills. In-class tasks encourage the development of note-taking skills and extend students’ abilities of critical analysis. Throughout the course, students become actively involved in scholarly topics, group discussions and academic listening and reading materials. This course encourages students to develop their essay, report writing and formal presentation skills.

Students who have completed this course should be able to:
1. express ideas clearly, comfortably, and accurately at length in English concerning a number of academic topics
2. compare and contrast the main arguments of related academic readings and lectures through in-class tasks, group work and discussions
3. research, develop a position on, and discuss or debate an academic topic using logically structured arguments, questions, and supporting examples
4. produce an academic report on a specific content-related topic

授業の内容


授業の方法・事前準備学修・事後展開学修

Lessons are based on the textbook and separate prints. Students will work together in pairs or in groups for reading and conversation exercises. Homework will consist of completing reading and writing exercises in the textbook plus other homework on the prints—these must be completed before class starts. Students should keep a notebook for vocabulary and other class notes from the lessons. Students will also be required to complete the online exercises to the textbook Q: Skills for Success as part of their overall grade for each quarter.

week 2: Unit 5 (reading and listening 1: CSR)
week 3: Unit 5 (brainstorming activity: CSR chart)
week 4: Unit 5 (forming an opinion, agreeing and disagreeing)
week 5: Unit 6 (reading and listening 1: advertising strategies)
week 6: Unit 6 (reading and listening 2: ethics in advertising)
week 7: Unit 6 (explaining the meaning of ads)
week 8: 3rd Quarter exam based on Units 5 and 6
week 9: Unit 9 (reading and listening 1: sudden wealth)
week 10: Unit 9 (reading and short listening: wealth from a company buyout)
week 11: Unit 9 (conversation about wealth vs. happiness)
week 12: Unit 10 (conversation: technology and communication)
week 13: Unit 10 (reading and listening 1: communicating by whistling)
week 14: Unit 10 (reading and listening 2: message in a bottle)
week 15: Unit 10 (writing practice: comparisons)
week 16: 4th Quarter exam based on Units 9 and 10
