テーマ・副題

This is a learner-centered writing course, which prepares students for researching academic topics and writing formal papers. This course will continue the development of university-level academic research and writing skills required by foreign institutions. Building on the skills acquired during the previous year, special attention will be paid to research paper organization, standard citation systems, and use of academic English.

授業科目の到達目標

Through this course students will:
1. Further develop reading and writing fluency through intensive and extensive reading.
2. Improve their academic writing skills through essays, reports, and research papers.
3. Analyze and synthesize relevant information from college-level readings and lectures as well as take a position on an issue and argue it persuasively.
4. Produce a research paper of at least 1000 words using authoritative sources.

授業の内容

This course will help students develop research writing skills and will help improve their reading, which in turn will improve the students’ abilities to retrieve data from secondary sources. The topic of the research paper will be, “A Change at School.” Students will look at problems around campus and determine a solution to the problem. To improve reading skill, students will practice reading and analyzing research articles and students will read at least 6 graded reader novels for the enjoyment of reading.

Other Skills students will practice:
1. Developing a logical sequence of ideas in paragraphs
2. Effectively paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting outside sources
3. Synthesizing and integrating outside sources
4. Creating and analyzing surveys for primary source data
5. Using different citation styles and in-text citation techniques
6. Running strong and descriptive sentences
7. Using hedging and intensifiers, and transitional words and phrases
8. Students will practice peer editing skills using Google Docs, a collaborative writing platform, which many companies today are using.

Students will need to bring their laptop computers to some classes. Students will use my online course system called Moodle and Google Drive, which will require a Gmail account. Students will also read 6 graded readers which can be found in the ERC. The ERC will be explained during orientation.

受講希望者は、第1タームの授業については初回授業の翌日(土日祝を除く)午前9時までに、第2タームの授業についても第1ターム初回授業の翌日(土日祝を除く)午前9時までに履修登録してください。午前9時に制限人数を超過した場合は、履修登録を締め切り、抽選により受講者を決定します。抽選結果は締め切り日の翌日(土日祝を除く)までに、全学講義棟2号館1階の英語関係掲示板及びWeb学生システムのメッセージでお知らせしますので、必ず確認してください。なお、抽選により受講不可の決定がされた場合は、大学が履修登録を取り消します。また、午前9時に制限人数を超過していない場合は、引き続き履修登録できますが、制限人数に達した時点で履修登録を締め切ります。なお、抽選後にキャンセルが出て空きが生じた場合、再び定員に達するまで先着順で登録することができます。ただし、登録できるのは、当該科目の抽選にはずれた方に限ります。
