授業の内容
While intensifying global competition and technological advancement are changing the rules governing labor markets, employing organizations are increasingly relying on their human resources (HR) and workplace innovations to compete and succeed in competitive markets. This highlights the importance of understanding how people are managed in diverse organizational settings, including different countries, sectors and occupations. We will examine the recent changes of the Japanese employment and HR system in the context of globalization and compare them with those in selected North American, European and Asian countries.

授業の方法
I will strive to make the class interactive and you must be involved on a regular and on-going basis. While my role is to facilitate and direct the discussion, and serve as a resource for you to gain new perspectives and knowledge on the Asian HRM and Employment relations system, Ultimately, it is your duty to learn. Your role is to engage one another in developing the best critical understanding of each paper. To make our classes successful, you must read the assigned material carefully for each session.
A good guideline in preparing for each class is to keep these questions in mind as you read, and make a page of notes for each article and book chapter (a response paper). You do not have to fully understand everything you read the first time around, but you do have to reach the basic level of understanding outlined in the four points above. Indeed, doing so will help you tremendously later, especially while doing a literature review for your thesis. Use this class as an opportunity to hone your critical thinking ability and help your colleagues hone theirs.

学生へのメッセージ
My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that the teacher’s role is to inspire students to think on their own, to challenge conventional wisdom, and to deepen their self-awareness. As such, I view the classroom as a safe, supportive environment where an instructor and students come together to share their knowledge in order to collectively improve each others’ understandings of the world. Accordingly, I place a heavy emphasis on experiential learning, dedicating a significant portion of my classroom time to hands-on exercises and activities that are followed by group discussion. Your preparation and participation will make this class more interesting!
