テーマ・副題
How has Japanese literature represented, and spoken to, the ongoing transformation of society in the modern era? This class aims at presenting a variety of perspectives from Japanese writers portraying and/or attempting to shape aspects of their social context.

The class offers the opportunity to critically engage with a range of works – including novels, short stories, essays, and works of scholarship – in Japanese literary history over the course of the modern era, from the mid-nineteenth century onward. We will consider the works, their historical context, and how generations of Japanese readers and scholars have approached them.

授業科目の到達目標
The course seeks to familiarize students with a variety of influential Japanese literary works and themes that have shaped the literary tradition. Students will be able to develop their critical reading and analytical skills and build on these to enhance their own research capabilities. All literary texts will be read in English translation.

『ディプロマ・ポリシー』を含む学部・研究科・学科等の学修・教育目標との関連
