授業の内容
The purpose of this course is to make students aware of the difficulties and challenges of understanding the structure of society and to become sensitive to aspects that might be excluded, marginalized, or forgotten. To this end, we will trace histories of contemporary social issues and exchange our ideas by analyzing different materials.
This course will approach history, cultures, and social issues from diverse perspectives. Students will analyze both primary and secondary sources to discuss contemporary social issues in Japan and around the world.

授業の方法
This course is organized by four different but overlapping topics to deal with and historicize contemporary social issues in Japan and around the world: State and Individual, Territories, War, and Citizenship and Residencies. We trace these key issues related to colonialism, migration, race, and gender back to the modern period of history mainly in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
In the latter part of the course, students will focus on their final group projects while continuously learning the course topics. As students develop critical perspectives each week, they will have the opportunity to present their ideas in classroom discussions, their response papers, and group projects. Active participation and engagement are important to the success of this course.
