Ideally, students wishing to register for this course should have attained a competent intermediate level of written English and be keen to improve on their English writing skills.
Please note that this class is not available for native English speakers.

授業の内容  
Structured writing activities to develop academic writing skills and research.

*Please note, due to issues with Covid 19, this class will be conducted via Zoom in the 1st semester unless otherwise stated. Please be aware of this is you wish to register for this class.
 
授業の方法  
Structured writing activities and task based group-work will form the core of this class to enable students to reach a shared understanding of the structure of formal style English language texts. This will involve a combination of discussion, reading and writing activities.
 
事前準備学修・事後展開学修  
A)[15回の授業で2単位の科目] 授業1回あたり合計4時間の事前準備・事後展開学修が目安となります。
B)[15回の授業で1単位の科目]  授業1回あたり合計1時間の事前準備・事後展開学修が目安となります。
C)[8回の授業で1単位の科目(新設のAL科目など)]  授業1回あたり合計4時間の事前準備・事後展開学修が目安となります。
 
授業展開(スケジュール)  
Week 1: Course introduction and orientation.
Week 2: Writing for an audience (anticipating questions) & paragraph construction (1).
Week 3: Writing for an audience (anticipating questions) & paragraph construction (2).
Week 4: Techniques for planning an essay (1).
Week 5: Techniques for planning an essay (2).
Week 6: Paragraph construction review.
Week 7: Mid-term report and peer review.
Week 8: The thesis statement.
Week 9: Using the thesis statement in the introduction.
Week 10: Linking the thesis statement to the essay body.
Week 11: Final essay topic discussion and planning (1).
Week 12: Final essay topic discussion and planning (2).
Week 13: First draft submission and peer review.
Week 14: First draft feedback and individual advice.
Week 15: Class review and feedback
Week 16: Final essay submissions.

成績評価の方法と観点  
Class-work (25%), preparation for class (25%), timely submission and quality of essay drafts (25%), timely submission and quality of mid-term and final assignments (25%). Failure to submit homework assignments or not meeting draft/final essay deadlines will be negatively marked.
 
成績評価基準  
埼玉大学単位修得の認定に関する規則に基づき、履修者が授業の到達目標をどれだけ達成したかに応じて以下の通り評価する。
「到達目標を超え、特に秀でている」=GP:4
「到達目標を超えている」=GP:3
「到達目標に十分達している」=GP:2
「到達目標に最低限達している」=GP:1
「到達目標に達していない」=GP:0。
なおGPが1.5、2.5、3.5と評価されることもある。
