授業の内容
This course will take the form of a directed readings seminar and thereby fulfill its first purpose of exposing students to many of the texts and issues that one should know about in order to teach modern Japanese history or to embark on independent research in the field. The second purpose of this course will be to place these works in historiographical context, comprehending the various perspectives individual historians have brought to their work and how their efforts relate to the larger field of modern Japanese historical studies. Reflecting the interests and research of the instructor, some emphasis will be placed on political and intellectual history, and on Japan’s relationship to the world. Finally, our primary focus each week will be enhancing our critical skills rather than fleshing out detailed narratives of modern Japan’s history.

*This course will be conducted live online via Zoom. Communication and distribution of materials will take place via WebClass, so it is important to register quickly and access that forum.*

Students other than those majoring in Japanese history are very welcome. The only requirement--other than sufficient English-language ability--is the desire to study and engage the material at hand.
